  • Queensland police car that only busts cockroaches.

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 by Marty Sanderson
Law enforcement patrol cars in Queensland seem to be on the look-out for miscreants who have scurried over the state border.

For any one that lives outside of our great nation, Australia has a proud sporting culture.

For those who are unaware, this time of the year is unique in that Rugby League (The greatest game of all) runs a a three game series between the players whom originated from the Mighty state of Queensland (colour - Maroon ; mascot - the canetoad) and the meaker, hapless state of New South Wales (colour - an insipid shade of blue; mascot - the cockroach)

    USA Ford Ad

Wednesday, April 13, 2011 by Marty Sanderson
Thanks to Deb Wallis for sending this one in.

If you are not a Ford fan, that's ok, but please watch this commercial, it's not what you think, and it's one of the best ways to promote a product I've ever seen. Loved it, it touches the heart.*

This can put a tear in your eye

Ford has not accepted a penny from the government bailout and should be marketing their action. But in my mind they have chosen to take a higher road ...a road with class. Enjoy this to the very end.

Ford outdid themselves with this commercial.

    falcon sprint

I took this photo in San Francisco 3 years ago, just thought I'd put it up, though I think the Australian version is slightly classier.

    Attachment: DSC03391.JPG

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Sunday, March 27, 2011: Cool photo Chris,
64 & 65 Falcons are much loved in the States hey,
but because we didn't get this body shape here the first time I saw one I thought it was a Chrysler.

  • Comment by chris carlin on Sunday, March 27, 2011: Yeah, the panels are quite different, just the roof and windows give it away really.

  • Comment by Mark Leitch on Sunday, March 27, 2011: I'm a fan of this shape, a link between the early drooped nose XK-Ms and the XR-Y. I bought my 64 convertible about a year ago and love it.

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Sunday, March 27, 2011: I Really do like them too.
A young bloke who worked for my wife @ I bought a 64 Sprint Convertible back in the '90's, super cool car & a super effort on 17 year olds wages.
I have a picture of our daughter Erika when she was about 3 or 4 standing next to this car around at my shed, I'm pretty sure that this old Falcon gave her an interest in cars more than any her parents have owned.

  • Comment by chris carlin on Thursday, April 14, 2011: have to admit mark, I am pretty jealous of your convertible sprint
  • STEAM POWER FROM THE 70's

Thursday, March 24, 2011 by Marty Sanderson
    Check this gem out.
    Steam powered XL Falcon.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJq2Hc_mXFI

  • Comment by Nathan Johnston on Thursday, March 31, 2011: The one thing they didn't mention is how long it takes from the time you start it until you can drive it? I assume you have to wait for it to build up pressure before you can drive- just like the old steam trains. Interesting concept. Wonder if anyone has been game to try it with an FG Falcon yet? ;-)

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Thursday, March 31, 2011: When I was a kid at school in the seventies they spoke of running cars on gas instead of petrol.
I used to spend most of the boring lessons drawing XA-XB Hardtops and T-Bucket Fords I remember one day in English drawing a Falcon station Wagon driven by me and a friend called Andrew that was powered exclusively by baked beans.
This concept car never got beyond the drawing board but it did earn kudos from my pimply & flatulent schoolmates.

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Monday, April 04, 2011:
    Further to steam power.
Tata Air powered cars web address below.

    http://www.themotorreport.com.au/5732/tata-air-car-powered-entirely-by-compressed-air-blow-me-down

  • Comment by Nathan Johnston on Tuesday, April 12, 2011: Thats cool .. very interesting. I like how many of the comments think of it as a zero emission car; but you still need energy (electicity from coal) to power the compressor to start the whole process - but much more efficient none the less. Would be interested to drive one and see what they are like...

    Brake Hose ruptured

Sunday, February 27, 2011 by Stewart Salisbury
I was excited about taking the Xp to Southport tonight, but when getting her ready she blew a brake hose on the back axle. Its been a while since a bought a brake hose, can anyone advise me if they are still available off the shelf or do i need to get a custom. It is the hose from the rear body to the back axle, Thanks Stewart

    Attachment: Brake line.jpg

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Sunday, February 27, 2011: Hi Stewart,
Bought one off the shelf at Streets Auto Spares Arana Hills, last Oct.
there are lots of old Falcs & club members in our neighborhood, perhaps they keep a good stock of parts because there is more call for them over here but I don't think you will have any trouble.
    Cheers
    Marty

  • Comment by Stewart Salisbury on Sunday, February 27, 2011: Thanks Marty, I ordered one from Auto Barn ($40.00)will be in Monday, nice that some parts are still available very easily. Cheers Stewart
  • Sick Mustang

Monday, January 31, 2011 by Colin Bray
I got a call from my father-in-law to come check out his Mustang Issue. The poor old girl has a sick 289.
Cold start fine - idles smoother than silk. Could sit a full glass on air filter and you wont spill a drop. Real nice.
First few min cold - fine - good acceleration. Then about 3-4 min and she looses one cylinder. 2 min later she loses another and she can barely get above 60. Really struggles with popping etc.
Back off for 30 sec and back comes a cylinder.
Park her back in the shed after a run. Idles fine - revs without hesitation like nothing is wrong.

I've pulled one lead at a time - can notice effect with all.
    Dizzy cap all good.
    Coil gets REAL Hot.

Thinking of swapping out the coil tomorrow. Do they partly fail ??

Any other tips would be nice. We could just take to her to a mechanic .. but where's the fun in that ??

    Any other suggestions??

  • Comment by Peter Fussell on Monday, January 31, 2011: G'day Col, assuming its running points rather than electronic ignition check the condensor too - there are some crook ones around at the moment.

  • Comment by Glenn Cuthbert on Thursday, February 03, 2011: Colin, these old girls have adjustable rockers even though they have hydraulic lifters, if they are to tight this exact thing will happen.
I would check and adjust them if needed.

    Hi all,
A young bloke at work is keeping an (ex Taxi) AU Falcon alive and giving it a new life. Check out the pic attached. Whitewalls are next and he'd like to get some pin stripes painted on.
Does anyone know someone in Bris who can do this?

  • Comment by noel lummis on Wednesday, December 22, 2010: He will probably have to get it pin striped, no one does it the old way anymore, the current products are mostly vinyl and last well.

During our safety talk today we covered safe driving over the holiday period. This video is kind of confronting, but a very poignant reminder of why we should take extra care on the roads - not just this holiday season, but everyday. Brake Pipe Connections

Sunday, December 19, 2010 by Chris Wain
    Hi All,

I have fitted a girlock twin cylinder brake master cylinder, a remote vh40 booster and xb disk brakes to the front of my xp falcon. I have been unable to bleed the brakes properly. At present the front brakes connect through the rear reservoir on the master through the booster and the rear brakes are straight off the front reservoir of the master.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Thursday, December 23, 2010: Hi Chris,
when you say Girlock is it the same twin master cylinder with one inch bore as the XT used?
  • Membership enquiries

Saturday, December 04, 2010 by Marty Sanderson
    Hi all,
as you probably guess we get a lot of enquiries from people interested in Falcons & joining our club, I had one such email request sent to us today & thought it might be interesting for you to read my reply.
(The person asked a question relating to perhaps out of a choice of two similar cars which one should he buy, same model-XM 2 door Hardtop one a Deluxe with all matching numbers or a Futura without matching numbers etc?

    REPLY

    Hi G*****,
Thanks for your interest in our club.
Whilst I myself have owned an XM Hardtop for over 20years & still think it is the best looking car Ford has ever produced in their 100 & something years you have asked for an opinion on what would be best for you.
Why not come along to our next meeting, you would rarely get the chance to chat with a group of people with a common interest but different opinions at any thing else but a meeting would you?
You didn't say where you lived but I would even suggest that a cheap flight & an overnight stay in Brisbane would just add to the fond memory of buying your old classic Falcon.
Let us know you are coming & I'll set something up so that you can chat to as many people as possible.
Just to let you know a little about us, We are pretty relaxed & social,

there is a large variety of members but you could sum us up as a predominantly male club that is family friendly,

many of the wives, girlfriends and kids of our older members are very much involved and are carblokes too.

we meet the last Tuesday of each month at TCB Tavern Oxley, Blunder Road Oxley (not the pub at the roundabout)

Whilst as a club we are not competitive at all, we do have 3 or 4 members who enter shows to win trophies,

some members are restorers, some modifiers, some drive originals and most are just drivers, we also have a couple of drag racers.

Come along to our next meeting or run & see if it suits.

    XP Diff questions

Tuesday, November 09, 2010 by Mark Wright
    Hi everyone,
I'm putting my XP Ute back on the road and along with the usual issues to get roadworthy (seals hardened up so leaking a bit) I'm considering puting a longer diff in it to give me some highway legs.
At the moment I believe I have the 4.0:1 commercial dff, as I get about 55 MPH at best but it has 4 studs all round. This seems to be in contradiction to the accepted wisdom that commecials were all 5 stud.
    So, three questions.
    1. What's the easiest way to find out what diff is actually fitted & how to confirm the ratio.
    2. What was the original spec on the Ute? 4 or five stud?
    3. Does the Sedan (3.5:1) rear axle, bolt straight into the Ute?

    Attachment: XP Ute.JPG

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Tuesday, November 09, 2010: Hi Mark.
    Q1.
go to this web page how to check diff ratio, its spot on although its an MG club website & I won't have to type info with one finger..

    http://www.mgparts.co.nz/diff_ratios.html

    Q2. 5 stud.
But any anything could happen to keep production going hey, especially with an XP commercial that perhaps came out late in the run when the XR was about to come out.
(my 1979 XC Panel Van is very much like that also)
Quick story in 1962 my neighbour worked for Ford & the first CKD kits for the Compact Fairlaine used Falcon Ute/Van 13inch rims because the 14 inch wheels were not ready.

    3. You can swap in complete rear assembly very easily seeing as how your car has a compatible 4 stud front end.
(Why not go looking for 3.2:1 Fairmont Diff, harder to come by but still might be around somewhere, I've had a few pass through my hands over the years.)
You can change your rolling diameter by finding a set of 14 inch 4 stud Fairmont Rims as well, if you keep to drum brakes front & rear 4 stud 14 inch Mustang wheels are the go also - inside you see they are rivited not welded like the Aussie wheel.

If you don't mind I think i'll put your question up for the public to see as a teaser to what lurks behind the door for members.

    Cheers
    Marty (Sec)

  • Comment by Nathan Johnston on Tuesday, November 09, 2010: Lovely looking ute - you don't see that many with the spats (spelling?) around anymore!

  • Comment by Mark Wright on Monday, November 29, 2010: Hi Marty, Thanks for the info, that MG site does give decent instructions.
I think the best option will be to find another rear assembly from a sedan and simply swap them out. Easiest to locate too.
    Cheers
    Mark

  • Comment by Mark Wright on Friday, February 25, 2011: All Done.
Located a 3.5:1 5 stud rear assembly on first call (Thanks Dan Bowden for pointing me to Earlybird Spares in Melbourne). Great price delivered to my door within 2 days.
I had a mate come over & we just figured it out as we went along. This is the first significant work I've done on the Ute & I haven't really done more than tyres, batteries & oil for twenty years, so I was stoked when the test run was perfect.
Next step is to swap out the speedo cable (driven) gear. I'm told it's about a 15 minute job. Not sure how many teeth gear to get. Mark & Danny at Earlybird have all six types, so I should be OK.
Anyway, I'm back on the road and can keep up with traffic now.
    Cheers
    Mark

    Club Day in Brazil

Thursday, March 04, 2010 by Marty Sanderson
Sent to me today by a great friend of the club Tiago Couto Bicalho at a club day he attended last week-end at Belo Horizonte city, Tiago owns the green F-Truck in the photos.
If you haven't met Tiago when he has been in Australia I've gotta say he is a terrific bloke, out of the blue about 10 or 11 years ago he just rang up said he was in Brisbane to improve his English, owned an F-truck back in Brazil liked old cars and would we like to meet.
